What to Pack for Sailing and How to Do it Properly

Complete packing list for 7 days on a sailboat

What to pack for sailing

What to pack for sailing and how to pack properly are two of the most common questions we get.

Let’s go step by step and show you the packing tricks experienced sailors use – along with a complete packing list for a relaxed 7-day sailing trip, so you don’t end up missing anything once you’re out at sea.

Essential

The best approach is to pack everything you think you’ll need and then remove half of it.

Most of the time, you’ll be in your swimsuit, so avoid overpacking.
“Less is more” is the key principle here.

Besides summer essentials – light clothing, swimwear, boat shoes, flip-flops, sunglasses, and sunscreen – you’ll also need a few extra items:

  • a couple of long-sleeve shirts
  • a few pairs of socks for cooler evenings
  • a light jacket or windbreaker, just in case
  • hat for the Sun and one for the wind

How much should you actually bring on a sailboat?

As little as possible – definitely less than for a regular vacation.

Space on board is limited, and you’ll end up bumping into things you didn’t even take out of your bag 🙂

Do you need a suitcase?

No.

A soft bag that can be folded and stored is ideal. Hard suitcases and high heels are not allowed on a sailboat.

Also, walking barefoot on a wet deck can be dangerous, so make sure to bring sneakers and closed-toe sandals.

If you pack too much, you’ll quickly realize you shouldn’t have 🙂

The most common mistake people make when going sailing:

They pack like they’re going to a hotel.

On a sailboat:

  • There are no closets like at home
  • There’s no space for hard suitcases
  • Everything you bring needs to fit somewhere

Basic packing list (what you actually need)

Clothing

  • 3–4 T-shirts
  • 1 sweatshirt or hoodie
  • light jacket or windbreaker
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • underwear
  • socks (yes, you’ll need them)
  • pajamas

For the sea

  • 2 swimsuits
  • towel (or two)
  • sunglasses
  • cap or hat

Footwear

  • sneakers or boat shoes (non-slip)
  • flip-flops/sandals

Important: soles must not leave marks on the deck

Hygiene & protection

  • sunscreen (SPF 30–50)
  • after-sun lotion (not a luxury — you’ll need it)
  • basic toiletries
  • any regular medication
  • probiotic (start taking it 7 days before the trip)

Documents & money

  • passport
  • travel health insurance
  • card + some cash

Things most people forget (but will need)

These are the items people almost always forget:

  • power bank
  • extension cable/adapter
  • light jacket for the evening (it can get cooler at sea)
  • bags for wet clothes
  • sailing gloves (optional, but useful)

What NOT to bring

  • hard suitcase
  • too many clothes
  • slippery shoes
  • “just in case” items

How much space is there on a sailboat?

Realistically:

  • Each person has limited space
  • Belongings are stored in cabins or small compartments
  • Everything needs to be compact

That’s why a soft duffel bag is the best option

Bonus: How to pack smart

If you want to look like you’ve done this before:

  • roll your clothes (don’t fold them)
  • Use packing cubes
  • separate “dry/wet” items
  • keep essentials within reach

The reality no one tells you.

On a sailing trip:

  • 80% of the time you’re in a swimsuit
  • 20% of the time in a T-shirt and shorts

Everything else you’ll barely use

Conclusion

If there’s one thing to remember:

You’re not packing for a hotel, you’re packing for life on a boat.
