What to pack for sailing and how to pack properly are two of the most common questions we get.
Let’s go step by step and show you the packing tricks experienced sailors use – along with a complete packing list for a relaxed 7-day sailing trip, so you don’t end up missing anything once you’re out at sea.
Essential
The best approach is to pack everything you think you’ll need and then remove half of it.
Most of the time, you’ll be in your swimsuit, so avoid overpacking.
“Less is more” is the key principle here.
Besides summer essentials – light clothing, swimwear, boat shoes, flip-flops, sunglasses, and sunscreen – you’ll also need a few extra items:
How much should you actually bring on a sailboat?
As little as possible – definitely less than for a regular vacation.
Space on board is limited, and you’ll end up bumping into things you didn’t even take out of your bag 🙂
Do you need a suitcase?
No.
A soft bag that can be folded and stored is ideal. Hard suitcases and high heels are not allowed on a sailboat.
Also, walking barefoot on a wet deck can be dangerous, so make sure to bring sneakers and closed-toe sandals.
The most common mistake people make when going sailing:
They pack like they’re going to a hotel.
On a sailboat:
Important: soles must not leave marks on the deck
These are the items people almost always forget:
Realistically:
That’s why a soft duffel bag is the best option
If you want to look like you’ve done this before:
On a sailing trip:
Everything else you’ll barely use
If there’s one thing to remember:
You’re not packing for a hotel, you’re packing for life on a boat.
